If you’re a Mom and you’re given only $10 to spend for a week’s worth of groceries for yourself, would you believe that this amount is enough to cover everything you need? It’s hard to imagine if this feat is possible, but one Mom finally did the challenge and proved that $10 is indeed enough!
The Quaint Housewife is a YouTube channel dedicated to wives and moms who are intent on being the best homemakers while keeping their budget minimal. You can check out this channel if you love budget shopping, budget cooking or anything budget-friendly for your family.
On one of its videos, The Quaint Housewife did a “$10 challenge” which is basically grocery shopping for only $10 to be consumed in seven days. This challenge is meant to help moms on a budget in handling money emergencies such as loss of a job, sudden sickness or having college students which would require a mom to tighten an already limited budget.
Buying all your 7-day food needs for only $10 seems impossible, but The Quaint Housewife says it is!
Going to the local grocery store with only $10 in her pocket, The Quaint Housewife went to the vegetable aisle first. She immediately saw scallions for only 54 cents and grabbed one pack.
These veggies are not just good for your health and your taste buds, its price is very affordable, too! The Quaint Housewife is planning to cook some tortillas in the coming week and the scallions she found will be perfect for the dish she’s got in mind.
Still within the vegetable aisle, The Quaint Housewife came across stacks of green bell pepper. These veggies are full of flavor and will make every meal smelling delicious. She grabbed just a piece and went on to the next item on her shopping list.
A balanced meal will not be complete without a bit of fiber and fruity sweetness. And where could you possibly get all of these? By eating bananas, of course! For only 42 cents a pound, The Quaint Housewife decided to grab five pieces that are “a little green so they don’t go bad too fast.” All in all, she was able to get a couple of pounds of bananas for only 84 cents!
Veggies may be necessary for a healthy meal, but so as bread filled with carbs that will keep you energized throughout the day. The Quaint Housewife wanted to make tortillas for the coming week and decided to buy white corn tortilla bread. To go with her meal plan, she also bought pinto beans, a great value pasta sauce and a pound of thin spaghetti.
Of course, The Quaint Housewife did not leave out her needs to make the most important meal of each day: breakfast. Opting for an affordable cereal with raisins, a gallon of milk and a carton of egg, The Quaint Housewife is finally ready to go to the cashier and see if she was able to hit her target of not exceeding over a budget of $10.
And indeed, what seemed impossible was made possible.
The Quaint Housewife bought all her groceries for only $9.67! But, the real challenge awaits her at home because she must make sure that living off of groceries worth only ten bucks for seven days is also possible.
As unbelievable as it may sound, The Quaint Housewife also made it through seven days with three complete meals each day using only the products she bought for less than $10.
She carefully planned her meals and was able to use all of her groceries wisely. Her meal plan does not look so bad at all, considering she spent so little.
This $10 challenge is an absolute success, and if this housewife can do it, surely we can all do it, too. Should there be any emergency and the need to be extra careful with spending arises, we can all be assured that ten bucks is all we need to ensure a week’s worth of food on our table.
