If there’s one trend that has been booming in popularity over the past few years, it has got to be tiny homes and downsized living in general. Even though a lot of people would be quite skeptical of living inside such a tiny building, it turns out you can actually create an amazing living space that offers simplicity, mobility, and versatility for a relatively low price tag.

In short, there are many pros and cons of living in a very compact home, and it can definitely be an experiment for some.

One 13-year-old teen decided to do some experimenting himself: he wanted to know if he could build his own tiny home on his own and live in it.

For some people, it’s a certain lifestyle – and one that’ll definitely make more sense once you see what kind of amazing things you can build on a small surface area. Let’s not forget that this teen is only thirteen years old and has already bravely decided to take on such a huge DIY project!

Luke Thill, a teen from Iowa, decided to build his own tiny house in the backyard of the family home.

The teen did basically all of the work himself, although he did ask for some assistance once a while. After all – building a home doesn’t exactly sound like a one-man project. But make no mistake, Luke took everything in his own hands and even raised the money himself to get the necessary materials.

While a lot of teens do chores and mow lawns to buy a new pair of kicks or other cool stuff, Luke decided to put that money towards his personal goal: building a tiny home nearly all by himself. Aside from mowing lawns, Luke also traded some stuff and organized a small fundraiser.

Luke definitely wasn’t an expert in all the things necessary to build a house, but he fixed that in a pretty smart way. For example, an electrician came over to help the teen take care of all the electrics, in exchange for Luke clearing out his garage box. A win-win situation!

Luke is pretty big on recycling and is proud to say that most of the resources were either repurposed or salvaged.

For example, he got a whole lot of siding from his grandma, and a friend of his uncle was able to hook him up with a front door. There were many other small items and materials that Luke received, which is also the main reason why the price tag for the whole building remained quite low. In total, Luke didn’t spend more than $1500.

The tiny house measures at 89 square feet and is about 10 feet tall.

This 13-year-old doesn’t have his own room, he has his own house! Here, he has privacy and he even installed his own fridge, microwave, and has set up a dedicated hangout zone, complete with tv and room for a video game console.

When the home was finally finished, he invited everyone to the back yard and gave them a personal tour.

The electricity works perfectly, but the house doesn’t have plumbing as of yet. It’s not too much of a hassle for Luke, however, as the house isn’t far away from his parents’ house.

He’s definitely proud of his minimalistic house which has some pretty nifty elements to save space. For example, the dining table is foldable to the wall and can instantly transform into the hangout zone. He loves his home as it gives him some peace to do his homework and relax a little.

Luke also gave a video tour of his tiny house, which you can view below.
