Although we all do our best not to be wasteful and to reuse things whenever we can, some things seem done for when they’re outlived their use. One of the more prominent examples in this category are knife blocks. Once you’ve gotten rid of your old knives and you have the block lying around, chances are you want to just get rid of it, right? As it turns out, though, there are a ton of creative ways for you to reuse your old knife blocks that are perfect if you’re looking for a crafty project to take on! If you have any kids, why not turn your knife block into something they can use when they’re doing arts and crafts? Though you don’t necessarily need a holster for your crayons, it’s still a fun and relatively simple project that you can do with your kids. To make it, simply slowly drill some holes into the knife lines, decorate the outside and you’re ready to go!
2. Use It To Store Thread For Sewing
If you spend a lot of time sewing, an old knife block can actually come in handy—because you can mount all kinds of different spools of thread on it for easy access. Just like the above, you’ll want to drill some holes into the block, put pegs in them and stick your spools on them. Decorate however you want!
3. Keep One For Paint Brushes
Even if you don’t have kids but you like to make art in your own free time, knife blocks can still come in handy. Like all the other ones, feel free to drill additional holes as necessary to keep all kinds of different brushes. If you’re feeling lazy and you have smaller brushes, you may not have to drill any at all!
4. Use It As An iPad Holder
If you’re less in the mood to do a ton of reworking, you can always use the block as a holder for an iPad or other tablet as well! Although you can also decorate it however you see fit, all you’ll have to do is get a Scrabble game tile or another thin piece of wood that you could use as a ledge and glue it to the backside. Set your tablet on it and you should be good to go!
If you do much handiwork around the house or you like to tinker in the garage, your knife block can be turned into a pretty handy tool rack as well. Unlike some of the others, you can simply turn the block around and drill into the angled side to make holsters for your tools. If you want to decorate it further we leave that part up to you.
6. Turn It Into A Flower Vase
This one may seem a little more unusual but with a little creativity, you could even turn your knife block into a handy vase! Depending on the kind of block you have, you could fill the holes with epoxy glue, put it through a saw and whittle it into whatever shape you want! On the other hand, you could still just hollow out the top, gloss the inside, fill it with water and use it that way. The choice is up to you!
7. Turn It Into A Caddy For Stationary
If you’re a teacher or just someone who likes to make arts and crafts, this project turning your knife block into a caddy for stationary is one of the more unique ones on this list! As always, all you really have to do is make some additional drill holes wherever necessary, repaint the outside if you’d like and throw all your stationary-related tools in it. Voila!
8. Turn Your Knife Block Into A Desk Organizer
If you spend much time working at a desk, you know just how cluttered it can get in a relatively short amount of time. To prevent this, turning your knife block into storage space for your most commonly used items is always a good idea. For the most part, you may not need to do much drilling into the top of the knife block to make it work—storing scissors, rulers and other things should be easy given what’s already there. Be sure to decorate it as well!

To be honest, there’s usually nothing wrong with a knife block when we’re deciding to get rid of it—so why get rid of it at all? Following some of the same steps we mentioned in the above, you can always redecorate or restain your knife block to make it look as good as new! Although the specifics are going to vary depending on what you want it to look like, we definitely suggest sanding the whole thing down and repainting it as a good way to start.
10. Why Not Try Out This Creative Knife Block Alternative?
Let’s say you finally do decide that it’s time to get rid of your knife block and you don’t have another option for where to put your knives. If you’re still looking for a replacement, why not try this universal knife block instead?
