  • 1/2 cup tequila
  • 1 lime, zested and juiced

The size of the angel food cake that you use for this recipe depends on the size of the gathering you need the bites for. If you are only making it for you and your family (people under 18 excluded) then a small- to medium-sized angel food cake should do.

If you are making the snack for a large group of people, then you should use a large-sized angel food cake. If this is the case, make sure to adjust the amount of the other ingredients required as well.

Step 1: Cut up the angel food cake

Start by cutting the angel food cake into small, bite-size cubes. The easiest way to do this is to cut the cake into sections and then cut these into your preferred size.

Step 2: Pour the tequila into a bowl

Next, pour ½ cup of tequila in a medium-sized bowl. Squeeze half a lime into the tequila for taste and mix. Remember, if you need to prepare enough tequila shots for a bigger group, you will need more tequila.

Soak the angel food cake cubes in the tequila. You can do this by sticking a fork in the cube and dipping it into the tequila and lime. Set the tequila-soaked cubes aside.

Step 4: Heat the oil

Next, you want to pour canola, or another vegetable oil, into a large pot. You should pour enough oil into the pot to bring the level of the oil to three inches. Heat the oil to 350 degrees, using the meat thermometer to check the temperature.

Step 5: Deep fry the tequila shots

Once the oil is hot enough, drop the tequila-soaked angel food cake into the oil. Fry the bites until they are golden brown. After removing each bite, place it on the cooling rack to cool. You can alternatively use a paper-towel-lined plate to cool your bites and remove some of the excess oil.

After the bites are cool, dust with powdered sugar. You can also add some lime zest for an added kick. Serve and enjoy this delectable bite of tequila heaven with many equating it to a mix between a margarita and a funnel cake.
