If you have a garden shed just lying around unused then you will love this.
The particular shed on this property was already wired for electricity which helped saved on cost. The cottage is under 110 square feet and is ripe for a make over.
It’s a modern farmhouse meets Bohemian cottage on a budget.
This project took around six weeks to complete.
Jason and Tricia’s stepdaughter begged them for a place she could stay in when she would come visit. A room away from the boys. It would also serve as a guest house when the parents were in town.
Juli’s only request was to use blue and the rest was up to them.
Drafty windows, rotting ceiling, plywood floor no more.
They worked every weekend and even late nights after coming home from the office with a vision all theirs. It’s a lot of hands on work as Jason has had a construction business for several years which gave him lots of experience to use.
The most time-consuming part according to Tricia were installing new windows, re-configuring the wiring, and putting up the faux shiplap.
Really going for that cottage vibe.
The existing beam wasn’t spared. Using plywood with hex screws, Jason and Tricia were able to make it look like it had metal bracing. Flat black spray adds to the look and contrast.
It brings a person’s eyes up to the ceiling according to Tricia.
Every design has a purpose be it form or function.
There’s not a lot of space so every bit of space was made to be as functional as possible. There is storage space built in almost everywhere. Even the built-in bed has a pop-up trundle which makes it expand in to a king sized bed.
Jason also built the cabinets flanking the bed for more storage. One being a tiny kitchenette and the other a closet. The white paint helps make the room feel more spacious.

It’s amazing to think all this was done in a little over a month. A little bit of imagination and passion and the once unused shed is beginning to look fantastic. And on a budget too.
Even the counter top is made of plywood with a faux soapstone paint finish sealed with polyurethane.
It is fully insulated with a portable air-conditioning system.
It is a mix of vintage and modern. Even the tv has a wooden sliding cover.
The coffee table is also wood and you can find a mix of metals from the knobs to the raw steel on the industrial pipe bar brackets.
Just hanging around on the weekends.
A small porch was added outside and the light fixtures are complemented by the galvanized metal sides. It looks amazing.
Embarking on projects like these need a lot of thinking and planning. And it is always best to consult with your city’s rules and policies first. There will be sleepless nights and days of wanting to stop. But the end results are always worth it.
What living space would be complete without some love.
It will seem daunting. Tricia’s tip is to set a schedule for yourself one day at a time. And since you are not working with a contractor, you have all the time to rest in between.The results are beyond satisfying.
