Watermelons are the picture of summer…and we want them to burst with flavor and color.

There are many times, however, that we pick what looks like the epitome of watermelon perfection, only to be disappointed when we take the first bite. Looking at the outside of a watermelon, it is very difficult to tell which one is the best unless you know what to look for.

“Watermelons do not ripen after they are picked so it is crucial to pick a watermelon that ripened on the vine. A ripe watermelon means it is sweet and filled with water.” – Jag Singh

Singh’s first tip is to look at the watermelon’s color. The stem is the first indicator of whether or not the fruit is ripe.

“If the stem is green, that means the watermelon was picked before it had the chance to become ripe.” – Singh

Singh also advises people to look for an obvious yellow spot on the watermelon.

According to Singh, no yellow spot or a faint white spot indicates that the watermelon didn’t have enough time to fully ripen on the vine.

The next helpful tip from Singh is to push on the watermelon’s skin to see if there is any give.

By pushing on the skin of the fruit, you can check to see if it has ripened. Singh warns that a watermelon that is hard on the outside with no give is not ripe at all.

The final, crucial tip is to tap on the watermelon to check for ripeness. Singh advises buyers to tap and listen for a hollow sound. Since watermelons are mostly water, this is a necessary tip for choosing the juiciest one.

“If it sounds hollow then it is filled with water. A watermelon that does not sound hollow when it is tapped means it doesn’t have much water content.” – Singh

“It looks really red and it’s filled with water and I tasted a piece of this watermelon and it is sugary sweet.” – Singh

Another great reason to keep eating deliciously perfect watermelons? They are packed with nutrients and great for hydrating.

Loaded with Lycopene, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B, and vitamin A, they are the perfect summer snack. Lycopene is an antioxidant linked to decreased risk of cancer, heart disease, and age-related eye disorders. – Mayo Clinic Health System
