Living tiny might come with a couple of sacrifices but comfort doesn’t have to be one of them.
In recent years, tiny homes have been on the rise and it isn’t difficult to see why. There are many advantages of living in a tiny home.
For example, they are much more affordable than a standard home. Not only does the house itself cost less, but the cost of utilities will also be lower than that of an average home. The reason being that the house is smaller.
In addition, many of these homes can be easily transferred to another location.
Brian Crabb of VIVA Collectiv designs and builds tiny homes for a living. Within the past several years, he’s worked with everyone from athletes, musicians, to your everyday neighbor to help give them the tiny home of their dreams.
One of those homes is The Ohana.
Crabb and his team designed this home for a family of four in Aloha, Oregon. The family is originally from Hawaii and was seeking a home that made them feel as if they were, well, at home.
However, the climate of the Pacific Northwest is vastly different than that of Hawaii. Thus, the next best thing was to build a home that was reminiscent of being in Hawaii.
“Living in the Pacific Northwest, they found they really missed the tropical climate and all it affords, so their request was to create a home where they could enjoy the ‘outdoors’ year-round,” Crabb said in an interview with TreeHugger.
The home they received was a 600-square foot tiny home. This, of course, isn’t exactly tiny as it is a little larger than a typical tiny home, but it certainly is smaller than an average home for most, particularly a family of four.
What makes their home stand out is that is it made from two tiny homes. Each side of the home is comprised of one 24×8 trailer with 247 square feet. In the middle of the trailers is a 247 square foot sunroom.
“Ohana” means family in Hawaiian culture and that is exactly what Crabb kept in mind when designing the serene layout.
“The sunroom was designed as a communal space for the family to enjoy together. . .” he shared.
The right side of the trailer contains the living room and two bedrooms for their two sons. The layout for the bedroom is that one is lofted above the other.
On the left side of the trailer is the kitchen, bathroom, and master bedroom.
Though tiny, the kitchen has a full fridge and a washer and dryer combo.
The bathroom even has a full sized tub. In addition, the walls feature a tile-based design of a huge tree. This eye-catching design will undoubtedly make them feel as if nature is indoors.
The house also features plenty of windows. The windows, paired with the sunroom, really makes for an outdoorsy and spacious feel.
“You’re so invited by that room when you look at the windows,” homeowner, Clayton Hanchett said of the sunroom.
Hanchett also shared that even though they reside in a tiny home, there’s more than enough space to entertain. He shared that they once had 50 guests over for a get-together.
However, the family sold their beloved tiny home in 2018. The Hanchett’s welcomed another son, making them a family of five.
“Our time so far in our tiny house has been so rewarding I can’t put it into words,” the family shared on their tiny home’s Facebook page.
Their tiny home showed just how liveable and unique tiny homes can be. We’re thrilled that they enjoyed their experience in The Ohana.
