Folding a fitted sheet is one of my least favorite things to do … other than going to the dentist! But it is really frustrating when the fitted sheet continues to misbehave and not fold like I want it to. Usually, I just give up in exhaustion and go do something else.

But, luckily, I recently found a short and easy tutorial from Jill Cooper at Living On A Dime to help me. Here are the quick and easy steps when you need to fold your fitted sheets.

Cooper’s instructions go like this: To begin folding your fitted sheet, hold the sheet lengthwise by both corners. The right side should be toward your body.

Take corner number one, and fold it over corner number two. Slide down the edge of the sheet, and then pick up corner three. Next, tuck that corner in. Now, slide down the next edge and pick up corner number four. Tuck that corner in. Then you’ll want to turn the sheet to the side and straighten out the two edges.

Then, place the sheet carefully onto a table. Fold in one end slightly, and then fold it in thirds. Then, fold it in thirds one more time. And if you’re folding a king or queen fitted sheet, you might be able to fold it in fourths.

After a couple of practice sessions, you’ll be folding your fitted sheets quickly and easily.

Why fold your sheets at all?

Now that you know how to effectively fold your sheets, you still may be wondering why you should bother folding them at all. Here’s why, according to Cooper: You can double your storage space by folding sheets versus balling them up and throwing them into your closet or dresser. I’d say that makes it worth the effort.

Cull your clothes and organize toys

Living on a Dime also offers some great tips to reorganize your clothes and children’s toys.

Start by getting rid of clothes that no longer fit or that you haven’t worn in a long time. “Most women only wear about 10-20% of the clothes in their closets,” according to Living on a Dime. You can give your old clothes to Goodwill, The Salvation Army, or other similar organizations.

Once you have purged your closet of old clothes, do the same with your shoes. Go ahead and get rid of old shoes you no longer wear. If they are still in good shape, you can also donate those.

Organizing your toys will also help clean up your house. First, toss out broken toys and donate toys your kids don’t use anymore. Also, if you have multiples of the same toy, also put those in the donation box. Next, store toys by type in cubbies or closet space to make it easier retrieve a toy without having to search everywhere.
