Wax candles can transform the mood in a room with their natural scents.

But there are times when the wax smell is too strong so candles aren’t the best idea to have in a room.

What’s the next best option?

Have you tried water candles?

Water candles smell great but don’t emit a strong scent and you can make it easily in your own home.

Would you like to learn how?

You will need a few basic items:

  • a few clear glass jars in different or the same sizes
  • water
  • lamp oil or vegetable oil
  • a couple of candlewicks
  • a transparent plastic sheet
  • scissors
  • pebbles (optional)
  • sand (optional)
  • beads (optional)
  • plastic flowers (optional)
  • food coloring (optional)

The last five items are completely optional but will add color to your candle.

Make sure the jars are clean.

Fill them up with water until 3/4 full.

Add oil to about 0.5 to 1 cm from the rim.

Take the plastic sheet and cut a circle piece that will fit the rim of the glass jar.

Cut a hole in the middle for the candlewick, then insert the wick through the hole and tape the excess wick flat against the plastic circle.

Now place the plastic circle on top of the oil with the wick end sitting straight up.

You’ve got yourself a water candle.

Make sure to let the wick sit long enough to absorb some oil so it will burn well.

You can place the water candle on your coffee table or the middle of your dining table or on your bedside table or any other high and flat surface in your space.

Make sure it’s still out of reach of children.

It may not be wax but it’s still a candle and can harm your children.

Now, let’s make a snazzier one.

Add water to your glass jar. Add the pebbles or beads.

Top it off with oil once again and add the candlewick.

When you light it up, the pebbles or beads will look mesmerizing.

The designs are limitless.

You can also add a clear gem or stone and add food coloring for a dramatic flair.

Or you can add sand and pebbles and a plastic flower in the middle.

If you have a party or a special occasion, you can create specific designs for the water candles to fit the theme of your event.

The best part is that it’s very quick to make. You don’t need to wait hours or days for the finished product.

They’re also easy to clean.

When the candlewick is too short to burn, you can dump out the contents and start over again.

There was a viewer who asked whether the plastic sheet was at risk of catching fire when the wick is fully consumed.

It’s a pretty fair question and a great one about fire safety.

“The wick is at a safe distance from the flame as long as there’s enough oil. When it runs out of oil, the candle stops burning. So the plastic never comes in contact with fire. It’s pretty safe,” Lightnin Girl answered.

That’s great to know.
