Let’s face it, nobody enjoys dealing with their toilet. Yet, with how many issues that can arise with one – sometimes there’s just no getting around it.
Fortunately, there are some pretty useful tricks to have when it comes to cleaning and fixing toilets. Read below to learn how to tackle everyday potty chores in simple ways. That way, you can uh…get along with your business.
Speed Up A Slow-Flushing Toilet
A lot of people don’t like spending more time in the bathroom than they have to. If your toilet is flushing like a turtle, then it could mean that the rinse holes (which are located beneath the rim) are clogged.
Fortunately for us, the Family Handyman explained an easy way to clean the holes of mineral deposits. Simply open up a wire coat hanger and find a small mirror. Next, position the mirror to see if the holes appear blocked. If so, the hanger tip can help open them back up.
Get Rid Of That Pesky Ring, Naturally
We love rings on our fingers, but in our toilets? Not so much. To get rid of a toilet ring without using harsh chemicals all you need is a lemon and coarse salt. In an interview with ABC 15, Daphne Munro explained what to do.
Simply cut the lemon in half and pour some of the salt on top. Use this new tool to scour the inside of your toilet bowl, and follow it up with a regular sponge afterward. It’ll make it sparkling clean without spending much.
No Plunger? No Problem!
Everybody has their own fears, but clogging a toilet with no plunger around probably gives most people the sweats. But before you freak out – there are a couple of easy things you can try first.
According to One Good Thing by Jillee, open the toilet tank and “close the flapper.” If you want to be super-safe, turn off the toilet’s water supply too. Then, fill a container with hot water (not boiling) and pour it in the bowl. All you’ll need is about 2-3 cups to hopefully get the clog moving.
If that’s not working though, Jillee shared another trick that involves dish soap (or liquid soap that’s available). Squirt the soap in the bowl until the count of three, then let sit for a short time. It should help break things up so you can have a successful flush.

Clobber Hard Water Stains With Kool-Aid
That’s right. Kool-Aid’s not just delicious, it’s pretty awesome when it comes to getting rid of hard water stains in the toilet. Hometalk shared that all you have to do is sprinkle a packet of the Lemonade around the inside of the bowl.
Now, leave it for one hour, then scrub it with a brush. Who knew cleaning hard water stains could be so simple?
Get That Dirty Brush Clean With Little Effort
If you think a toilet is dirty, just imagine how disgusting the brush is that cleans one! Next time you scrub your bowl, try this trick afterwards that was featured on the Rachael Ray Show.
Squirt bleach inside the toilet and let the brush soak in the bowl for one hour. Now, let it airdry by resting the brush under the toilet seat, with the head facing inwards. It’ll be much less germy when you put it back in its holder.
Detect A Leak On The Cheap Using Kool-Aid
If you needed yet another reason to keep Kool-Aid in the cabinet, here you go. To discover if there’s a leak in your toilet tank, the Bob Vila site suggests you can grab a pack of dark-colored Kool-Aid.
Pour the granules into the back of the toilet and wait for half of an hour. If you see that the water in the bowl has changed color, then you know there’s a leak.
Toss In A Homemade Potty Cleaner
Looking to keep your hands from getting gross? I don’t blame you. Instead, make your own “Toilet Cleaning Bombs” using three ingredients.
Mom 4 Real mixes the following in a bowl:
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 1/4 cup of citric acid
- 1 Tbsp of Dish Liquid
Once the ingredients are evenly combined, fill the sections of an ice cube tray or mold with the mixture. Let them sit for four hours or overnight to dry. Lastly, pop out the tabs and keep them in a sealed container.
Drop a fizzy bomb into the toilet bowl to help deodorize and clean it without making your hands yucky. Wasn’t that easy?
