For this summer hack you will need one skewer, three small plastic cups, and three larger plastic cups. Place each small plastic cup within a larger cup and press the skewer through all six cups. Fill all the cups with water, adding food coloring to the water of the larger cup is optional but fun. Put the cups in the freezer overnight and the next morning you will have three cups made of ice. This will not only keep your drink cool but your hands too!

2. Ice Blocks

Purchasing ice to fill coolers can get expensive after a few times. If you are hanging outside during the summer heat, coolers are essential to keep your drinks and food cool. Instead of having to purchase ice, buy a medium size container from your nearest dollar store and make your own ice blocks. Fill the container up with water and place in the freezer overnight. The next morning all you will have to do is tug the container’s corners to release the ice block and place in your cooler. These ice blocks will work just as well as bags of ice and will only cost the original $1 from the container.

3. Ice Cream Cake

Ice cream is an essential summertime treat. Yet, scooping out hard ice cream can be tiresome and make you more hot during the struggle. Next time you buy a gallon ice cream container and it is really hard from the freezer, place that yumminess in the microwave for about fifteen seconds. Flip the entire container of ice cream onto a plate and you will have your own version of ice cream cake. The presentation is pretty and it is much easier to cut the ice cream as slices of cake.

Homemade slushies are a perfect summertime treat that will help keep you cool. If you have juice packs, you can freeze them for a few hours in your freezer. Once they are frozen, cut the tops of the packs and dig in with your spoon. This is the easiest way to create a fruit slushie.

If you don’t have juice packs you can make them yourself:

“In a medium sauce pan, add two cups of sugar and one cup of water. Bring it all to a boil and stir it until the sugar is dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool and thicken. Now transfer that batch to some containers and add one packet of unsweetened flavored drink mix. Toss some ice in your blender and grind it up to an edible consistency. Use a ladle to transfer it over to cups or bowls and then squeeze that syrup right on top,” Household Hacker explains.

6. Flavored Ice

When the heat comes it is very important to stay hydrated. If you want a bit more flavor to your water, a great life hack is to make your own infused ice cubes. Cut up any fruits that you want to flavor your water with and put the small pieces into your ice tray. Fill the ice tray with water and place the ice tray in the freezer. These ice cubes will infuse your water with the filled fruits, a yummy way to stay hydrated.

Coolers are expensive, so here is a great hack to create your own cooler. All you need is bubble wrap, a cardboard box, and foil. First, measure the dimensions of your cardboard box. Once you have the dimensions you can cut your bubble wrap to fit inside the box. Wrap your bubble wrap with foil and place inside the box. Make sure to include a piece of foiled bubble wrap at the bottom of your box to keep it from getting soggy. Once it is complete, fill your box with your drinks of choice and ice and you have yourself a homemade cooler.

The struggle of living in a house with no air conditioning during summertime is a real struggle. If your fan is not cutting it for you, add a container of ice and water to the front of the fan. Fill a tray of your choice with ice and a small amount of water. Place the ice container in front of the fan and it will mimic an air conditioner. This will definitely help you cool down quicker.

9. Terra Cotta Coolers

If you have extra terra cotta pots this is a great hack to create your own cooler. You will need two terra cotta pots that are of differing sizes. Place a layer of sand into the larger pot and then place the smaller pot inside of it. Then you need to fill the larger pot completely full of sand with a layer of sand in the smaller pot too.

“Put the cooler directly in the sun and cover it with a towel and then soak it with water. Once the water begins evaporating, it will cause a chilling effect on the inside which can drop the temperature significantly. This will allow you to keep your food and drinks nice and cool even in the most sunny of conditions,” Household Hacker explains.
