Have you ever walked through a garden with an arched trellis? It feels like you are strolling through a lush, green entranceway and will emerge out through a tunnel to an adoring crowd of people on the other side. They really can make your garden feel fancy.

As it turns out, they aren’t very expensive or difficult to build.

They can also help you utilize the space in your garden efficiently as well.

Vertical gardening expands the space you have.

Growing vegetables on an arched trellis helps make the best use of your space by growing up rather than growing out. You can also reduce the amount of soil-borne diseases this way. Simply put, you will have more space to use for growing.

What can you grow on a vertical trellis?

Vegetables such as cucumbers, vining squash, gourds, melons, and pole beans are prefect for being grown this way. It also just feels great to be able to pick a fully grown vegetable off an arched trellis rather than bending over and pulling it out of the ground.

Pick up some cattle panel and some T-posts.

To build your own arched trellis, you’ll need to pick up some cattle panel fencing. It is available at most home and garden stores.

Cattle panel is a standard type of fencing used on farms and it works amazingly well for building these types of trellises.

This will be the only purchase for the project and you can pick some up for $30 to $35.

It is also available for less depending on where you are purchasing it.

Plant the T-Posts & bend the fencing over the archway

Building an arched trellis is as simple as planting some T-posts in the ground, bending some cattle fencing to form an archway, and then attaching those two things with zip ties.

Step 1: Put the T-posts where you want them

Plant the T-posts in the ground with the notches facing what will eventually become the inside of the archway. This will provide some stability for the fencing.

It’s also important to remember here that you should leave bedding space between the panel and the walkway so that you can still plant things on the inside of your archway.

Step 2: Place the panel

You will likely need 2 people for this part. Plant the fencing on the side of the archway with the T-post already in place. Then simply bend it up and over what will be your archway and plant on the other side.

Step 3: Tie her up

Now, use zip ties to attach the T-post to the cattle panel for added stability. Now you’ve done it, you have your garden arched trellis!

Many people who viewed the video left a comment detailing how their own arched trellis building went.

“I watched your video, went and bought a cattle panel, posts and post pusher. Husband came home, put it up and we love it. Just need to put up more. We decided to make extra gardens by the street this year and offer free tomatoes and maybe cucumbers. We’ll have our own in the back gardens,” wrote one viewer.

“You inspired me, I just built my first cattle panel arch trellis today! Love your channel!” wrote another.
