In this video, you’ll learn how to create a planter that doesn’t require consuming things out of plastic containers just so you can recycle them.

This planter is made from sawdust.

For the planter, we’ll need three sets of ingredients. General glue, finishing glue, and general varnish.

For the general glue, you’ll need:

  • 1.5 liters of water
  • 2 cups of cornstarch
  • 3 1/2 tblsp of vinegar.

In 1.5 liters of water, throw in two cups of cornstarch.

Mix them together then put over a flame. Stir the mixture constantly to avoid lumping. Once the mixture turns into a porridge-like substance, take it off the flame.

Add vinegar into the mixture then incorporate it evenly.

Combine the starch glue with sawdust.

Using a spoon, mix the glue and the sawdust while the glue is still hot. Once it cools down to room temperature, you can use your hands to further combine the two.

Continue kneading the mixture so it can combine fully. It should look like a mulch of wet cardboard.

Cover your mold with plastic wrap.

This can be a plastic basin, a tub, or a cup.

Press the mixture against the inside surface of your mold and shape it accordingly. Make sure that your sides have the same thickness.

You can use the width of your index finger as a reference.

Press a ladle against the mixture to even the surface. Once done, remove the mixture from the pot and let it dry under the sun.

You can extract your pot by putting cardboard over the mold and flipping it. Carefully lift the mold and peel off the plastic cover.

Make sure to turn it upwards too so that the insides can be dried as well.

Next, prepare your finishing glue.

Using a cup of the glue you prepared earlier, add a cup of white glue. Mix thoroughly then brush on the surface of your molded pot.

After that, leave it out again under the sun so it can dry out.

In the meantime, prepare the varnish.

For this one, we’ll use silicone glue and alcohol. Combine in equal parts. For instance, if you’re working with larger pots, mix 1 cup silicone glue with 1 cup alcohol.

For smaller projects, try mixing 1/2 cup of each. Once the pot completely dries, drill a hole under the pot for drainage.

Brush the varnish on the pot to waterproof it. Make sure to coat the outside and the inside of the pot evenly. This will also make your pot much more durable.

The finished product is incredible.

You’ll not only end up with a sustainable pot, it looks amazing as well.

Plant in your favorite produce or your favorite houseplants like ferns or herbs.
